Know Your Numbers

November is American Diabetes Month! Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. It can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease and other health problems if it's not controlled.

  • 1 in 10 Americans has diabetes today. That's more than 30 million people.
  • Every 23 seconds, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes.
  • 86 million Americans are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death.
  • Diabetes causes more deaths than AIDS and breast cancer combined.

Follow up with your doctor and check your blood glucose levels. People who are at risk for type 2 diabetes can lower their risk by more than half if they make healthy changes. These changes include: eating healthy, getting more physical activity and losing weight.

Memorial Health Care Systems offers Diabetic Support and Continuing Education and a Diabetes Prevention Program. Education is important to manage diabetes. For more information on Diabetic Support or Prevention, call 402-643-2971.
