Car Seat Safety

Car Seat Safety
Car Seat Safety

At Seward Memorial Hospital, all newborn babies are required to have their car seats checked before going home. We have certified child passenger safety technicians on staff that check your car seat for recalls, help you install the seat correctly in your vehicle and answer any questions that you may have about child restraints.

We have a car seat education class once a month. The class is held at Seward Memorial Hospital. During the one-hour class, you will watch a short video about the proper use of a child restraint, practice using your seat and install the seat in your vehicle. Please bring the car seat you will be using for your newborn with you to class. See the box below for tips about choosing a car seat. For more information please call (402) 643-2971.

  • When buying a seat, there isn't one brand that is better than another. Ask yourself the following questions:
  1. Is it easy to use?
  2. Does it fit in in my vehicle?
  3. Will it fit my baby?
  • Car seats can only be used for six years from their manufacture date--this date is printed either on the seat or on a label on the seat. The seat shouldn't be used after they expire.

  • Only use a previously used car seat if you know the history of the seat (has it been in a car crash or has it had any recalls/repair). Seats purchased from a garage sale or second hand store may have problems that you are unaware of, so be sure to inquire about the history of the car seat.
